During the past six months after long debate, the ERC Scientific Council has decided to withdraw as a supporter of cOAlition S. Members of the ERC agreed on implementing full and immediate OpenAccess that is independent of cOAlition S acitivities. In doing so, the ERC wishes to pay closer attention to young researchers who present the future of European science and innovation. cOAlition S remains that support for hybrid journals has failed to accelerate the transition to full and immediate OpenAccess over the past two decades. Publication of research results in hybrid venues will be non-compliant as of 1 January 2021. Hybrid journals will exacerbate inequalities among researches, because only some of them will be able to cover expensive publication fees. The Scientific Council considers that this will be detrimental for young researchers or those working in fields which OpenAccess policies are more difficult to implement.
